The Classical Myths in Alejo Carpentier's work

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on studying classical mythology and it's reflection in the work of Alejo Carpentier. The goal is to describe the greek and latin myths and analyze their usage mainly within the novels of this cuban writer. The first part evolves around the definition of myth and also the application of mythology topics in music and art. Second part is devoted to interpretations of classical myths in literature, observes their evolution mainly through the work of spanish and Latin American writers. This part also contains the description of several mythical stories, the reflection which are later analysed in Carpentiers work. The last chapter handles the analysis of Alejo Carpentiers novels and short stories, emphasizing his conception of Greek-Roman topics.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřená na studium klasické mytologie a její odraz v dílech Aleja Carpentiera. Cílem této práce je tedy popsat řecké a latinské mýty a analyzovat jejich zpracování především v románové tvorbě tohoto kubánského spisovatele. První část práce se soustřeďuje na definici mýtu, zabývá se rovněž pojetím mytických témat v hudbě a umění. Druhá kapitola se věnuje interpretacím klasických mýtů v literární tvorbě, sleduje jejich vývoj skrze díla zejména španělských a latinskoamerických spisovatelů. Tato kapitola rovněž obsahuje popis několika mytických příběhů, které budou následně podrobeny analýze v Carpentierových dílech. Poslední část se zaměřuje na rozbor a popis románů a povídek Aleja Carpentiera z hlediska jeho jedinečného pojetí řecko-římských témat.
