Spatiotemporal variability of hydrometeorological extremes, unfavourable weather conditions and their impacts in the Czech Republic area in the 1891–1910 period

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou hydrometeorologických extrémů, nepříznivých povětrnostních vlivů a jejich obětí v období let 1891–1910 na dnešním území České republiky. Data byla excerpována z článků Lidových novin a Moravské orlice. Během řešeného období bylo zaznamenáno celkem 1544 událostí. Extrémy byly podle jejich charakteru rozděleny do pěti kategorií (srážky a povodně, konvektivní bouře, projevy sucha a vysoké teploty, zimní fenomény, extrémní mrazy). Nejčastěji se objevovaly konvektivní bouře (850 případů) a nejčastějším extrémem byla bouřka (829 případů). Během excerpce novinových článků byly zaznamenány také oběti hydrometeorologických extrémů a oběti zimních sportů a propadnutí se ledem. Zaznamenáno bylo celkem 649 obětí, z nichž 606 zemřelo v důsledku některého z hydrometeorologických extrémů, a 43 v důsledku zimních sportů a propadnutí se ledem. Nejvíce úmrtí zemřelo na následky extrémních mrazů (238 obětí. Tato práce rozšířila již existující databázi hydrometeorologických extrémů a jejich obětí a navazuje na předchozí práce s touto tématikou včetně bakalářské práce, kde bylo zpracováno období 1911–1920.

Abstract:

This master´s thesis deals with the analysis of hydrometeorological extremes, adverse weather phenomena, and their victims during the period 1891–1910 in the present-day territory of the Czech Republic. The data were excerpted from articles published in the newspapers Lidové noviny and Moravská orlice. During the studied period, a total of 1,544 events were recorded. According to their nature, the extremes were divided into five categories (precipitation and floods, convective storms, manifestations of drought and high temperatures, winter phenomena, and extreme frosts). Convective storms were the most frequent category (850 cases), while thunderstorms represented the most common individual extreme event (829 cases). During the excerpting of newspaper articles, victims of hydrometeorological extremes as well as victims of winter sports accidents and ice break-through incidents were also recorded. A total of 649 victims were documented, of whom 606 died as a result of hydrometeorological extremes and 43 due to winter sports accidents and falling through ice. The highest number of deaths was caused by extreme frosts (238 victims). This thesis expanded the existing database of hydrometeorological extremes and their victims and builds upon previous works dealing with this topic, including a bachelor’s thesis that processed the period 1911–1920.
