The changing image of Taoism in the Czech context

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá proměnlivým obrazem taoismu v českém prostředí. Zaměřuje se na předmluvy k přeloženým taoistickým dílům Laozi a Zhuangzi a na základě informací, které se dovídáme v předmluvách, sestavuje obraz toho, jak je v nich taoismus prezentován. V teoretické části práce se taoismus představí obecně na základě informací z odborné literatury. Rovněž se seznámíme s tím, jakým způsobem byla představa o Číně na Západě vytvářena a jaké okolnosti tento proces provázely. Budou představeny teorie orientalismu a sinologismu, které poslouží jako opěrný bod v praktické části. Následně, v praktické části, se přistoupí k práci s předmluvami. Bude se postupovat po jednotlivých autorech, u kterých se vždy uvedou stručné informace o nich samotných, a pak se přistoupí k analýze vlastní předmluvy. V závěrečné části práce se zhodnotí výsledky pozorování a bude se prezentovat zjištění práce.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the variable image of Taoism in the Czech Republic. It focuses on prefaces to translated Taoist works of Laozi and Zhuangzi and on the basis of the information conveyed in these prefaces an image of how Taoism is interpreted is being compiled. In the theoretical part, Taoism is presented generally using information from the sources concerning the issue of Taoism. Besides, the way of how an image of China was created in the West and what circumstances accompanied this process is presented in the theoretical part as well. The theories of Orientalism and Sinologism, which serve as the foothold in the practical part, will also be presented. Afterwards, in the practical part, prefaces are analysed. Firstly, there will be a brief introduction of the author and then we will proceed with the analysis of the preface itself. In the final part of the thesis the results of the observation will be evaluated and the findings will be presented.
