Servants and domestic service in East Bohemia during the 17th and 18th centuries

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá institucí čelední služby v období raného novověku. První část spisu je věnována právnímu postavení sloužících v období od pozdního středověku až do kodifikace občanského práva na počátku 19. století. Druhá část již vychází z analýzy archivních pramenů především státní a vrchnostenské provenience, na jejichž základě sleduje stav i vývoj čeledních poměrů na východě Čech v 17. a 18. století. Podstata celého výzkumu pak stojí na analýze poddanských seznamů pro východočeské panství Choltice v letech 1681?1700 a 1765?1784, na jejímž základě se snaží postihnout čelední službu coby součást životního cyklu tehdejšího člověka.

Abstract:

This study focuses on an interesting topic of social history, which remains somewhat neglected by Czech historiography ? the institution of servants and domestic service during the Early Modern Era. The first part of the study explores the legal status of servants from the late Middle Ages up to the codification of civil law at the beginning of the 19th century. The second part of the study draws on an analysis of archive sources mainly originating from the structures of the state and the nobility; these sources enable the author to trace the evolution of domestic service in East Bohemia during the 17th and 18th centuries. The core of the research is based on an analysis of registers of hereditary subjects at the East Bohemian Choltice estate compiled in 1681?1700 and 1765?1784, which reveal the role played by domestic service in the life cycles of individuals during the era under investigation.
