The influence of trait anxiety on attention and its bias induced by repeated stress in three attention networks.

Anotace:

Přílišná nebo naopak nedostatečná ostražitost bývá součástí úzkostných poruch. Pozornost, jako součást mentálních stavů navozovaných stresem je ale třeba studovat dynamicky, abychom postihli všechny její nuance. V tomto experimentu bude tedy sledována změna funkčnosti tří pozornostních sítí – bdělost, orientování a exekutivní pozornost, za různé míry naakumulovaného stresu. Hlavním tématem pak bude zjistit, jak se aktivace těchto sítí liší po expozici stejných stresových podnětů u jedinců ze zdravé populace v závislosti na jejich míře úzkostnosti. Bude se snažit zachytit fenomény zvýšené ostražitosti i odpojení vyvolané stresovými podněty a tím přispět právě k pochopení role pozornosti ve stresové reakci. Výsledky ukazují signifikantně se zvyšující účinnost u pozornostního orientování v závislosti na zvyšující se závažnosti stresové varianty. U bdělosti byl zjištěn signifikantní opačný efekt. To neodpovídá předpokladům, protože rostoucí trend byl předpokládán u obou těchto sítí. U exekutivní pozornosti byl nalezen nevýznamný klesající trend, zatímco u zkreslení nebyl nalezen žádný efekt. Nesoulad je diskutován.

Abstract:

Both excessive and diminished vigilance seem to be present in some of the anxiety dis-orders. Attention as part of stress-induced mental states is, however, necessary to study dy-namically to capture all its nuances. As part of this experiment, functionality of three atten-tional networks – alerting, orienting and executive attention will be recorded, while different levels of cumulative stress will be presented. Focus will then be put on how activation of these networks to similar stress cues differs in healthy individuals based on their trait anxiety. Phe-nomena of both hypervigilance and dissociation induced by stress will be in the spotlight of measurement. The goal will be to bring insight into mechanisms of the role of attention in stress reaction. The results revealed elevated functionality in orienting network related to the distressfulness of the presented stress battery. In alerting network, the effect was opposite. This does not correspond with the hypotheses which assumed a rising trend in both alerting networks. In executive attention a small nonsignificant trend was revealed. In bias, there was no trend found. Incongruency between results and assumptions is discussed.
