Hedgings tools and their use in the financial market

Abstract:

Bachelor´s thesis essentially deals with problematics of hedging instruments and their subsequent application in practice in order to eliminate risks in financial market. There is detailed description of risks in financial markets, hedging strategies and possibilities of assurance against monetary and interest rates in Slovak Republic in this bachelor´s thesis. The risk in economic expression is known as potential financial loss, the deviation from desired state in both – positive and negative direction. Currently there are several known methods of partial or complete elimination of financial risks, which include insurance, diversification, risk avoidance and so on. One of the effective options to reduce risks are also hedging strategies using derivatives. Financial derivatives are a relatively young representatives of financial market instruments, but effective in eliminating the risk, especially currency and interest rate. Derivatives are also largely used for speculative trades. Among the alternatives for reducing risks we could include natural, internal hedges implemented in the organization through better management of assets and liabilities. This practice (under condition of good management) is usually effective and, moreover, in comparison with an external hedging cheaper. By joining Slovak Republic to the European Monetary Union conditions in sence of elimination of currency risk in the transactions between countries using the common currency EURO, have improved for Slovak exporters and importers. The threat of interest rate risk is still current. The bachelor´s thesis seeks to present the most effective forms of hedging strategies against the interest rate and currency risk.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa v podstatnej miere zaoberá problematikou hedgingových nástrojov a ich následnou aplikáciou za účelom eliminácie rizík na finančnom trhu. V práci podrobnejšie charakterizujeme riziká na finančných trhoch, hedgingové stratégie prostredníctvom finančných derivátov a možnosti zabezpečenia sa voči menovým a úrokovým rizikám v Slovenskej republike. Riziko sa v ekonomickom ponímaní chápe ako potencionálna finančná strata, odklon od žiadaného stavu v pozitívnom aj negatívnom smere. V súčasnosti sú známe viaceré spôsoby čiastočnej alebo úplnej eliminácie finančných rizík, kde môžeme zahrnúť aj poistenie, diverzifikáciu, vyhýbanie sa riziku a pod. Jednou z efektívnych možností znižovania rizík je sú aj hedgingové stratégie pomocou derivátov. Finančné deriváty sú predstaviteľmi relatívne mladých nástrojov finančného trhu, ale účinných pri eliminácii rizík, a to hlavne menových a úrokových. Deriváty sú tiež v značnej miere využívané aj na špekulatívne obchody. Medzi alternatívy zmierňovania rizík patrí aj prirodzený, interný hedging vykonávaný vo vnútri organizácie prostredníctvom lepšieho manažovania jednotlivých aktív a pasív. Pri dobrej organizácii a manažovaní býva účinným prostriedkom a navyše je v porovnaní s externým hedgingom lacnejší. Vstupom Slovenskej republiky do Európskej menovej únie sa zlepšili podmienky pre slovenských exportérov a importérov z hľadiska odstránenia menového rizika, pri obchodných transakciách medzi štátmi používajúcimi spoločnú menu EURO. Hrozba úrokového rizika je však stále aktuálna. V bakalárskej práci sa budeme snažiť o prezentáciu najefektívnejších foriem hedgingových stratégií proti úrokovému a menovému riziku.
