Sir Reginald Johnston and His Career in China

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce pojednává o siru Reginaldu Johnstonovi (1874–1938) po dobu jeho působení v Číně v letech 1898–1930. Text mapuje Johnstonovy začátky v koloniální službě v Hong Kongu a britské koncesi Weihaiwei. Rovněž se zaměřuje na jeho působení na pozici učitele u dvora posledního císaře dynastie Qing v Zakázaném městě v Pekingu a na vliv, který měl na císaře. Práce také zahrnuje období po ukončení Johnstonových pracovních povinností u dvora – jeho návrat do Weihaiwei a předání tohoto území zpět pod čínskou správu. Primárním cílem práce je představit osobnost Reginalda Johnstona, který byl jak znalcem čínské kultury, společnosti, historie a filozofie, tak i čínského jazyka.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on sir Reginald Johnston (1874–1938) during his career in China between 1898–1930. The text follows his beginning in the colonial service in Hong Kong and British leased territory of Weihaiwei. It also analysis his presence at the court of the last Emperor of the Qing dynasty in the Forbidden City of Beijing, as well as his influence on the Emperor. Thesis also focuses on the period after Johnston finished his professional duties at the court – his return to Weihaiwei and rendition of this territory back under Chinese administration. The main purpose of the thesis is to introduce Reginald Johnston, who was not only an expert on Chinese culture, society, history and philosophy, but also on Chinese language.
