Blackface: A prehistory

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na ránou fázi představení blackface minstrelů v Americe v polovině 19. století, od jejího počátku až do období nejvyšší popularity v pozdní části 50. let 19. století. Představí společenský a historický kontext tohoto období, strukturu představení, použité materiály a způsoby jak byly adaptovány pro tato představení, stejně jako některé z raných, vlivných herců. Dále provádí analýzu hudebních a performativních materiálu přítomných v tomto představení. Cílem je dopracovat se k více celistvému pohledu na představení blackface minstrelů, který si je vědom jak rasistického, tak nerasistického materiálu obsaženém v tomto žánru.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the early period of the antebellum blackface minstrel show, from its inception to the height of its popularity in the late 1850s. It introduces the social and historical context of the time period, the structure of the shows, the materials used and the ways in which they were adapted for these performances, as well as some of the early influential performers. It then analyzes the musical and performative materials present in the show. The goal is to arrive at a more holistic view of blackface minstrel shows, one that is aware of both its racist and non-racist material present in this genre.
