Quantitative psycholinguistic analysis of texts produced in the context of anxiety and depression

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce jsou vztahy mezi lingvistickými znaky a psychickým stavem a psychologickými charakteristikami. Cílem práce bylo najít lingvistické markery deprese, úzkosti a jednotlivých dimenzí osobnosti v česky psaném textu. Účastníci výzkumu napsali texty na čtyři různá připravená zadání. Pomocí komputační lingvistické analýzy byly kvantitativně porovnávány texty osob prožívajících deprese a úzkosti s texty kontrolní skupiny a následně byly v celém souboru zjišťovány korelace lingvistických proměnných a skóre na škále DASS-D zjišťující depresivní příznaky a škálách osobnostního dotazníku Big Five Inventory. Všechny výpočty byly prováděny s ohledem na pohlaví a typ textu jakožto důležité intervenující proměnné. Na základě předchozích zahraničních studií byla předpokládána spojitost mezi zájmeny 1.os. čísla jednotného a depresí, úzkostí a neuroticismem, což nebylo v této práci v českém textu potvrzeno. Nejsilnější vztahy byly zjištěny mezi depresí a užíváním předložek, osobních zájmen, neurčitých číslovek a slov s emočním významem. Lingvistické projevy psychických stavů a osobnosti byly výrazně ovlivněny také pohlavím a typem textu.

Abstract:

Present thesis researches the relationships between linguistic markers, mental state and psychological characteristics. The purpose of this work was to find linguistic markers of depression, anxiety and particular dimensions of personality within texts written in Czech language. The participants of the research were given four writing tasks. The resulting texts written by persons with depression or anxiety were compared via a computerized linguistic analysis with texts produced by control group and then the correlations of linguistics variables and DASS-D scale score measuring symptoms of depression and scores of Big Five Inventory scales were examined. Statistics were carried out for gender and every type of texts separately. Based on the purposed studies the relation between depression, anxiety, neuroticism and the use of first person singular pronouns was expected but not found in the present work. The most important relations were found between depression and usage of prepositions, personal pronouns, indefinite numerals and emotions words. Linguistics markers of mental states were significantly influenced by gender and text type.
