Consuming hedonism and the pursuit of happiness in the welfare society

Abstract:

The presented diploma thesis deals with the search for happiness in the welfare society, materialism, and consumer behavior. The main goal of the first portion of the theoretical part is to examine the development of the concepts of hedonism or happiness and to gain an insight into the issues of various aspects of consumer hedonism. The second portion of the theoretical part deals with consumer behavior, materialistic tendencies, and the impact of marketing on the current state of society and of its critical evaluation. The last segment of the theoretical part of the work consists of introducing the focus group method as a data collection technique. The aim of the practical part of the work is to make four surveys using the focus group method on four samples of respondents divided primarily on the basis of age. The purpose of the study is to compare the inclination to materialism between a sample of young, middle-aged and senior people. The research focuses on respondents' propensity for materialistic and consumeristic oriented behavior, their relationship with these subjects and a critical overview of the current state of society. The output of the research is an overview of research questions, their answers and a summary of new, interesting or unexpected observations that have emerged from the course of the research.

Abstract:

Predkladaná diplomová práca sa zaoberá hľadaním šťastia v spoločnosti blahobytu, materializmom a konzumným správaním. v prvej zložke teoretickej časti je hlavným cieľom preskúmať vývoj pojmov hedonizmus či šťastie a náhľad do problematiky rôznych aspektov konzumného hedonizmu. Druhá súčasť teoretickej časti sa venuje konzumnému správaniu, materialistickým tendenciám a vplyvu marketingu na súčasný stav spoločnosti ako i jeho kritickému zhodnoteniu. Posledným segmentom teoretickej časti práce je predstavenie metódy focus group ako techniky zberu dát. Cieľom praktickej časti práce je zhotoviť štyri prieskumy pomocou focus group metódy na štyroch vzorkách respondentov rozdelených primárne na základe veku. Účelom štúdie je porovnať sklon k materializmu medzi vzorkou ľudí v mladom veku a skorej dospelosti s respondentmi v strednom a staršom veku. Výskum sa sústreďuje na skúmanie sklonov respondentov k materialisticky a konzumne orientovanému správaniu, ich vzťahu k daným problematikám a kritickému náhľadu na súčasný stav spoločnosti. Výstupom výskumu je prehľad výskumných otázok, ich zodpovedanie a zhrnutie nových, zaujímavých alebo neočakávaných pozorovaní, ktoré vyplynuli z priebehu výskumu.
