Religion and Passion - the Main Controversy in Two Novels of François Mauriac

Abstract:

The Bachelor Major Thesis "Religion and passion – the main controversy in the works of François Mauriac" analyses two major novels by Mauriac, namely The Frontenac Mystery and The Knot of Vipers. The thesis provides summaries of these two novels, followed by an analysis of the protagonists and a number of other characters that are important for the coherence of the analysis. As for the analysis, it is focused on the relationship of the main characters to religion, God, faith and passion. The main aim was to capture the inner fight of the religion against human passions that the characters are going through. Religion and passion may seem antagonistic at first sight, however, in the conception of Mauriac they become compatible and more than that, they are complementary, the former cannot exist without the latter. The world of Mauriac is not black and white because all is tighten together: good and evil, beauty and ugliness, passion and religion. This unity creates a mosaic of characters, which resembles the real world by its complexity and ambiguity.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce "Spor náboženství a vášně – hlavní motiv v díle Françoise Mauriaca" je podrobnou analýzou dvou Mauriacových románů, jsou jimi Tajemství Frontenaků a Klubko zmijí. V práci je shrnut děj obou románů, následuje rozbor hlavních postav a postav vedlejších, které hrají důležitou roli pro ucelenost analýzy. Při charakteristice postav byl kladen důraz na jejich postoje ve vztahu k náboženství, Bohu a víře; a na vášně, které je ovládají a řídí jejich chování. Hlavním cílem bylo vystihnout v analyzovaných dílech boj náboženství proti vášni, který se odehrává v člověku. Tyto dva zdánlivě protichůdné koncepty v se Mauriacově podání stávají slučitelnými, dokonce se navzájem doplňují a jeden bez druhého nemohou existovat. Mauriacův svět není černobílý, protože všechno je spolu úzce spjato: zlo a dobro, krása a ošklivost, vášeň a náboženství. Tato jednota a provázanost tvoří mozaiku románových postav, která se podobá realitě právě svou spletitostí a nejednoznačností.
