Historical Reality and the Position of Women in Tolkien's Middle-earth

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zamýšlena jako srovnávací analýza. Srovnávanými komplexy jsou hrdinky knih J. R. R. Tolkiena a skutečné ženy evropského středověku. Pro srovnání využívá autorka středověkou látku. Starověké kultury, například Keltové, nejsou ve srovnání zohledněny. Historická fakta čerpala autorka z historických monografií a představují tedy kompilaci poznatků různých badatelů. Hlavním přínosem práce je aplikace těchto poznatků na příběhy Středozemě. Cíle: ? Autorka vyzdvihuje v Tolkienových textech ta místa, kde se nejlépe a nejjasněji odráží inspirace historickou realitou. ? Zároveň se autorka zabývá pasážemi, kde se Tolkien od skutečných historických schémat výrazně vzdaluje. ? Záměrem práce je pak ukázat, že Tolkienovy ženské hrdinky v sobě shrnují rysy nejrůznějších historických osobností od byzantské princezny Theofano až po Johanku z Arku. ? Analýza Tolkienových hrdinek podaná v této diplomové práci má za cíl umožnit čtenářům Pána prstenů i jiných Tolkienových knih lepší pochopení vývoje ženských postav.

Abstract:

In the thesis the author was supposed to carry out a comparative analysis of the female characters in the stories by J. R. R. Tolkien and medieval European women. The timeframe for the comparison is limited to the Middle Ages. Ancient cultures, such as the Celts, are not considered in the thesis. The historical facts in the thesis present the summary of things discovered by different historians. The main emphasis rests in the application of these facts on the scenes from Tolkien?s books. Aims: ? The author means to emphasize those places in the stories where it is possible to spot the real reflection of the medieval historical reality. ? Simultaneously, the author points out the passages where Tolkien changed the medieval standards significantly. ? The aim of the thesis is to show that many female characters in Tolkien?s books combine features of various medieval female personalities, ranging from the Byzantine princess Theofanu to Joan of Arc. ? The analysis of the Middle-earth women should help the readers of Tolkien?s stories understand the hidden motives of the characters as well as the subtleties of and shifts in the interpersonal relations.
