Convention and Controversy in the Hands of British Women The Neoformalist Film Analysis of Orlando

Abstract:

Centrem zájmu této bakalářské práce je film Orlando režisérky Sally Potter, který byl natočen podle předlohy Virginie Woolf a s Tildou Swinton v hlavní roli. Film je zpracováván metodou neoformalistické analýzy, jak jej definovali David Bordwell a Kristin Thopmson v dílech Breaking the Glass Armor, Neoformalist Film Analysis a Narration in the Fiction Film. Doplňujícím zdrojem se mi stala kniha Andrewa Higsona English Heritage, English Cinema, díky níž srovnávám Orlanda s Higsonem definovaným žánrem heritage cinema neboli kinematografie národního dědictví, a to v prostředí Velké Británie. První část práce se zabývá ekonomickým a kulturně-historickým kontextem, do čehož je zahrnuta produkce a distribuce filmu a jeho následná kritická, teoretická i divácká reflexe, se zvláštním zaměřením na queer problematiku a genderové přesahy. Součástí úvodu je rovněž osvětlení základních pojmů, které tento typ analýzy využívá. Druhá část se již pak potýká se samotnou neoformalistickou analýzou a společně s informacemi z první části práce nachází tzv. dominantu, jež je základním organizačním principem sledovaného filmu a jejíž znění je rovněž zahrnuto do názvu bakalářské práce.

Abstract:

Sally Potter's film Orlando, based on the novel by Virginia Woolf and starring Tilda Swinton in the leading role, is in the centre of attention of this bachelor thesis. The film is examined in accordance with neoformalist film analysis as it was defined by David Bordwell and Kirstin Thompson in their works Breaking the Glass Armor, Neoformalist Film Analysis and Narration in the Fiction Film. As an additional source I used the book by Andrew Higson English Heritage, English Cinema, which helped me to compare Orlando with the genre of heritage cinema in the environment of the Great Britain. The first part of the thesis is concerned with economic and cultural-historical context, which includes the production and distribution of the film and its consequent critical, theoretical and spectator reflection, and specially focuses on queer issues and gender bending questions. The introduction also contains explanation of basic terms used by this type of analyses. Second part focuses on the neoformalist analyses itself and together with the information from the first part identifies so-called dominant, the main principle of the film, which also appears in the title of the bachelor thesis.
