U.S. military forces in Iceland and their influence on Icelandic literature. Reflection of army presence on Laxness's Atom Station

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o přítomnosti amerických vojenských jednotek na Islandu od druhé světové války do roku 2006 a reflexi v islandské literatuře. Vysvětluje historické pozadí obsazení ostrova a samotný průběh. Dále pak popisuje islandsko-americké vztahy a sociální a ekonomické dopady. Text je rozdělen na část historickou a část literární, kde se zabývám, zda byli islandští spisovatelé ovlivněni přítomností armády na ostrově. Cílem práce je zhodnotit, zda a jakým způsobem působení americké armády na Islandu ovlivnilo islandskou společnost a hospodářskou situaci. Dále jestli byli nějakým způsobem ovlivněni islandští spisovatelé, kdy se hlouběji zabývám dílem Atomová stanice islandského spisovatele Halldóra Laxnesse.

Abstract:

The thesis delas with presence of U.S. army in Iceland since the World War II to 2006 and their reflection on Icelandic literature. It explains the historical background of the occupation of the island and the process itself. It describes also the Icelandic-American relations and the social and economic impacts. The text is divided into a historical and literary part where I consider if the Icelandic writers were influenced by the presence of the army on the island. The goal of the thesis is to evaluate wheter and how the U.S. military presence has affected the Icelandic society and economic situation. Furthemore, if the Icelandic writers were in some way influenced with focus on the book The Atom station by Halldór Laxness.
