Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je osobnost spisovatele Ernesta Hemingwaye, s důrazem na dobu, kterou autor strávil na Kubě. Období, které Hemingway na Kubě prožil, se v minulosti nedostalo od životopisců a akademiků příliš pozornosti. Na otázku, proč tomu tak bylo, hledá odpovědi první kapitola této práce. Chceme-li do oněch více než 20 let, které autor na Kubě prožil, nahlédnout detailněji, je nutné zaměřit se na vzájemný vztah mezi autorem, Kubánci a Kubou, jako místem vzniku řady jeho významných děl. Tyto otázky jsou předmětem druhé a třetí kapitoly. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá Hemingwayovou rolí v rámci kulturního průmyslu. Již během jeho života se Hemingwayovo jméno stalo do velké míry obchodní značkou, která s léty neztratila na hodnotě. Bližší pozornost je věnována váhavým a někdy až neobratným pokusům Kuby využít Hemingwayovu popularitu pro potřeby místního turismu a ekonomiky. Kromě nepřeberného množství faktů a doložených informací o životě Ernesta Hemingwaye existuje také řada nejasností. Hemingway byl a nadále zůstává předmětem mýtů. Tématem mytologie svázanou s jeho osobností se zabývá pátá kapitola. Se současným oteplováním vztahů mezi Kubou a USA se nabízí otázka, jakým způsobem se bude Hemingwayův status na Kubě vyvíjet. Závěr práce poskytuje zamyšlení nad jeho vlivem na jeho příznivce i kritiky v budoucích letech.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on Ernest Hemingway, specifically in the context of his long years of residence in Cuba. The first chapter explains why Hemingway's Cuban period was to some extent neglected by biographers and academics alike. Considering that Hemingway spent more than 20 years in Cuba, one cannot gain full insight into this period without examining relations between Hemingway and Cuba. Chapter two and three discuss what Hemingway thought of Cuba and what Cubans thought of Hemingway. Chapter four discusses the all important culture industry. Even during his life the Hemingway brand name won greater and greater recognition and value. Close attention is paid to Cuba's halting attempts to exploit this name for the benefit of tourism and the economy of the island in general. The hard facts of Hemingway's life have become so well known and indeed so controversial that it was inevitable that he would be the subject of much mythology and even self-mythologising. This is dealt with in chapter five. There seems to be no end in sight to this process which is growing in importance, given the recent rapprochement between Cuba and the United States. The conclusion of this dissertation offers speculation regarding Hemingway's presence in the minds of fans and critics in the years to come.
