The Image of the Native Woman: Grande Sauterelle by Jacques Poulin

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of Native women, in particular with their position in the tribes of North America, and compares their reality with Grande Sauterelle, a character from Jacques Poulin’s novel Volkswagen Blues. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part outlines everyday life of American Indian women from childhood to old age. Further, it focuses on Indian women in leading positions and considers whether the tribes of North America could have been unambiguously matriarchal. The ending of the theoretical part is dedicated to the importance of female element in beliefs of native people and to the way the roles of women changed during and after the colonization. The practical part then deals with the analysis of the character of Grande Sauterelle, mainly with her problem of finding her own identity. The reality as described in the theoretical part is compared to the reality created by the author, and the thesis aims to answer the question whether Jacques Poulin created a plausible image of an Indian woman, or whether it is somewhat embellished and idealized.

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou indiánských žen, konkrétně jejich postavením v kmenech Severní Ameriky, přičemž realita je srovnána s literární postavou Grande Sauterelle z knihy Volkswagen Blues Jacquese Poulina. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části. V první je nastíněn každodenní život indiánských žen, od dětství až po stáří. Dále se práce věnuje indiánským ženám ve vedoucích pozicích a otázce, zda v kmenech Severní Ameriky mohl existovat stoprocentní matriarchát. Závěr teoretické části je věnován důležitosti ženského elementu ve víře původních obyvatel a změnám v roli žen během kolonizace a po ní. V praktické části je pak rozebírána postava Grande Sauterelle, zvláště pak její problém s nalezením vlastní identity. Realita nastíněna v teoretické části je zde srovnána s realitou vytvořenou autorem a práce si klade za cíl odpovědět na otázku, zda Jacques Poulin vytvořil věrohodný obraz indiánské ženy nebo jestli se jedná o přikrášlení a idealizování původních obyvatelek.
