The Meaning of Life in Kazuo Ishiguro's Novel Never Let Me Go

Abstract:

The aim of this work is a deeper study of some significant concepts and themes that occur in the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, namely the narrative style of Kazuo Ishiguro will be analysed and the thesis will attempt to prove this style to be unique in terms of the postmodern grasp of reality using science-fiction elements, elements of dystopia a distinct language and setting which highlight the mission of the novel. The body of the thesis deals with the questions of dignity and humanity seen through individual characters and life events they are forced to face. The analysis is supported by various psychological approaches and theories in an attempt to understand the author's intention in creating these very characters in this very setting. Furthermore, humanity itself will be dealt with as the work tries to negotiate its real meaning and the general understanding within present society.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je hlubší studium několika výrazných konceptů a témat vyskytujících se v románu Never Let Me Go od Kazua Ishigura a sice, narativní styl Kazua Ishigura, který bude součástí analýzy a celkově se práce dokazuje, že tento styl je unikátní z hlediska současného postmoderního uchopení za použití vědecko-fantastických prvků, prvků dystopie a odlišného jazyka, což vyzdvihuje poslání tohoto románu. Součástí práce je také řešení otázek důstojnosti a lidskosti klonů, kteří se v pojetí konkrétních postav setkávají s různými životními strastmi, jimž musí čelit. Samotná analýza románu je podpořena dvěma psychologickými přístupy a teoriemi ve smyslu pochopení autorova záměru při vytváření konkrétních postav a specifického prostředí. Součástí analýzy textu je i problematika samotné lidskosti, přičemž je bráno v potaz správné porozumění této obecné problematiky v kontextu současné společnosti.
