COVID-19 and change of the form of ceremonies in agile teams working with Scrum methodology

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na dopad pandemie COVID-19 na podobu ceremonií v agilních týmech využívajících metodiku Scrum. Hlavním cílem této práce je identifikovat klíčové změny ceremonií vyvolané příchodem pandemie a následně navrhnout sadu doporučení, pomocí kterých je možné Scrum ceremonie přizpůsobit pro práci z domova. Za tímto účelem bylo provedeno deset rozhovorů ve dvou agilních vývojových týmech využívajících metodiku Scrum, které byly vlivem pandemie donuceny náhle přesunout veškerou svou komunikaci a spolupráci do online prostředí. Z analýzy těchto rozhovorů vyplynulo, že jedním z největších problémů v průběhu pandemie byla absence běžné komunikace v kanceláři, kvůli které týmům začaly chybět důležité informace. V obou týmech se tak tato komunikace začala nahrazovat velkým počtem ad-hoc schůzek. Komunikace v kanceláři se však začala nahrazovat i formou nových pravidelných ceremonií, kdy si týmy začaly přidávat například nové schůzky označované ve Scrumu jako Product Backlog Refinement či pravidelnou schůzku navazující na Daily Scrum. Na základě poznatků z tohoto výzkumu a rešerše literatury je v závěru této diplomové práce navržena sada doporučení, která dalším týmům nabízí praktické rady, jak je možné si Scrum ceremonie a ostatní schůzky přizpůsobit pro spolupráci v online režimu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the form of ceremonies in agile teams working with Scrum methodology. The aim of this thesis is to identify key ceremony changes caused by the pandemic to formulate a set of recommendations that can help tailor Scrum ceremonies for remote work. To fulfill this purpose, ten interviews were performed in two agile development teams working with Scrum, which were forced to switch all the team communication and collaboration to the online mode due to the pandemic. According to the analysis of these interviews is evident that one of the main problems during the pandemic was the absence of co-located communication which caused a lack of key information in teams. This communication started to be substituted by a large number of ad-hoc meetings in both teams. Co-located communication was substituted also by new periodic ceremonies, for example by new meetings in Scrum terminology named Product Backlog Refinement or by a periodic meeting following the Daily Scrum. Based on acquired knowledge from this research and the literature review, the end of this diploma thesis introduces a set of recommendations that offer practical hints to other teams on how to tailor Scrum ceremonies and other meetings for remote collaboration.
