Film and third dimension: Specifics of film narrative and picture in 3d cinema

Abstract:

Práce se pokouší postihnout důvody současného znovuoživení zájmu o 3D film. Zkoumá metody, jakými stereoskopie ovlivňuje již zavedené filmové postupy, shrnuje poznatky zahraničních studií a názory odborníků s ohledem na vliv filmové stereoskopie na vzájemný vztah diváka a filmového díla. Ve své první části staví práce na výčtu všech pro výzkum důležitých funkcí a vlastností 3D filmové stereoskopie a na stručné historii připomínající výrazné historické mezníky 3D kinematografie. Druhá část definuje formální aspekty 3D filmů, objasňuje klíčové principy jejich výroby a projekce, zaměřuje se na imerzivitu a diváka stereoskopického filmu. V předposlední části se pak práce soustředí na kritické reakce na toto médium a vyjmenovává negativní zdravotní dopady spojené s recepcí stereoskopické projekce, analyzuje aktuální 3D boom a dále se zamýšlí nad budoucností tohoto formátu. Závěrečná část se na základě pojmů objasněných v předešlých kapitolách analyticky soustředí na vliv 3D složky na filmové vyprávění prostřednictvím rozboru tří přelomových stereoskopických filmových děl nedávné doby. Klíčovou otázkou, na kterou se tato práce snaží najít odpověď, je vztah mezi vizuální podívanou, kterou třetí rozměr cíleně vyvolává, a filmovým vyprávěním.

Abstract:

This thesis attempts to describe the reasons of recent resurgence of interest in 3D cinema. It analyses the methods by which stereoscopy affects already established cinematic processes, it summarizes the findings of foreign studies and opinions of experts considering the influence of stereoscopic cinema on mutual relationship between audience and film work. First part of this thesis is based upon enumeration of all functions and characteristics of 3D stereoscopic cinema important for further research and upon brief history listing the significant historical milestones of 3D cinematography. In its second part the thesis defines formal aspects of 3D films, clarifies key principals of its shooting and projection, later it focuses on the immersiveness and audience of stereoscopic film. Next part of this thesis centers on critical responses to this medium and names negative health effects related to reception of stereoscopic projection, it analyzes the recent 3D boom and further reflects upon the future of this format. Based on terms explained in previous chapters the final part analytically focuses on influence of 3D element on cinematic storytelling through analysis of three recent revolutionary stereoscopic film works. The key question for which this work tries to find the answer is the relationship between visual spectacle that the third dimension often occasions and the film’s narrative.
