Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the novel The Known World written by Edward P. Jones and the morally bankrupt institution of slavery it describes. The plot of this fiction is built around the cruel institution of slavery where a black slave becomes a slave master. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the tainted relationship between the corrupt slave society and all the individuals that form it. The thesis is focused on the pernicious impact the unethical institution has on the different characters. The last chapter is devoted to the facts known about black slaveowners of the antebellum period as the main character of The Known World is a black master thanks to whom the theme of the novel is regarded exceptional among other slave narratives.

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je morálně zkrachovalá instituce otroctví v díle The Known World od Edwarda P. Jonese. Román podává nevšední obraz kruté společnosti, kde se černošský otrok stává otrokářem. Cílem práce je poukázat na to, jak se nemorálnost celé instituce odráží na životech jednotlivců a zkoumat její neblahý dopad na lidský charakter. Poslední kapitola práce se zabývá známými fakty o černošských otrokářích, kteří žili v Americe v období, které předcházelo Občanské válce. Pro svůj neobvyklý námět je román The Known World považován mezi ostatními příběhy, které se zabývají problematikou otroctví, za výjimečný.
