Race as an Open Social Conflict: Race Riots in Britain

Abstract:

Living of ethnic communities next to mainstream British culture contributed to the outbreak of riots throughout Britain. Their occurrence gave rise to immediate response and provoked political, ideological, and cultural debates. The main object of this work is to follow the emergence and course of the riots in the second half of the 20th century and to examine debates following the riots in British society. The work also concentrates on the most recent Oldham riots of 2001 and analyses the debates after the riots, focusing on education, housing, employment, economy, and policing. The work evaluates the progress Oldham has achieved so far and suggests solutions for further improvement.
