The Role of Lord Byron during the Greek War of Independence

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce nesoucí název Role lorda Byrona v boji Řeků za nezávislost analyzuje působení britského romantického básníka lorda George Gordona Byrona v letech 1823 až 1824 v Řecku během boje řeckého obyvatelstva za nezávislost na Osmanské říši. V práci je nastíněna situace před válkou, avšak více se věnuje pobytu lorda Byrona v Řecku, a to v širším kontextu hnutí evropských filhelénů, kteří usilovali o vznik samostatného Řecka a toužili po obrodě starověké vzdělanosti. Cílem je nejen vysvětlit důvody Byronovy cesty a jeho vztah k místnímu obyvatelstvu, ale též objektivně zhodnotit, do jaké míry byla jeho mise do Řecka pro povstalce přínosem.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with influences of british romantic poet Lord George Gordon Byron in Greece in 1823-1824 during the fight of Greek population for their independence from Ottoman Empire. There is a summary of the pre-war situation in this thesis, however more attention is given to Lord Byron's operations in Greece in the context of the european Philhellenes movement, who aimed for the Greek independence and wanted to restore the ancient education and culture. The purpose of this thesis is not only to explain the reasons of Byron's travel and his relationship to local population but also to evaluate to what extent was his mission to Greece beneficial for the uprising.
