The Trialectics of Spatiality in the Biblical Description of Solomon's Temple

Abstract:

Kritické pojetí prostorovosti nabývá v současné době na popularitě co se týče analýz písemných či archeologických pramenů starověkého Blízkého východu. Diplomová práce následuje tento trend a přejímá koncept trialektiky prostorovosti Edwarda Soji jako výchozí teorii a aplikuje ji na biblický popis Šalomounova chrámu (1 Kr 6-7; 2 Pa 3-7). Tuto trialektiku lze shrnout jako rozdělení na: Firstspace (první dimenze) ve smyslu fyzického, prožívaného prostoru; Secondspace (druhá dimenze) ve smyslu symbolického, pojímaného prostoru; a Thridspace (třetí dimenze) ve smyslu žité, vnímaného prostoru. Při aplikaci této teorie na biblický popis Šalomounova chrámu, ke kterému máme k dispozici pouze tento biblický písemný pramen, je nezbytné provést komparaci s analogiemi chrámu dochovaných ze starověké Syropalestiny, u kterých máme dochované povětšinou pouze archeologické prameny, a to v rámci Firstspace, tedy fyzického prostoru pro podobné chrámové typy a přibližnou dobu stavby (asi 10. stol. př. n. l.). Také práce komparuje Šalomounův chrám s mezopotámskými a egyptskými chrámy, především v rámci symbolického (Secondspace) a žité (Thirdspace) prostoru. V rámci kapitoly Thirdspace byla také provedena kritická analýza dvou vybraných biblických textů popisujících Chrám: 1 Kr 6-7 a 2 Pa 3-7. Tato analýza byla nezbytná z důvodu ideologických a mocenských perspektiv na Šalomounův chrám, a to z perspektiv exilního deuteronomisty a poexilního chronisty.

Abstract:

The concept of critical spatiality is currently gaining in terms of popularity in analyses of textual or archaeological sources in the ancient Near East. The thesis follows this trend and adopts the concept of the Edward Soja’s trialectics of spatiality as a basic theory and applies it to the biblical description of the Solomon’s temple (1 Kings 6-7; 2 Chronicle 3-7). This trialectic can be summarized as a division into: Firstspace in terms of physical, experienced space; Secondspace in the sense of a symbolic, conceived space; and Thirdspace in terms of lived, perceived space. When applying this theory to the biblical description of Solomon’s temple, for which we have only this biblical written source, it is necessary to make a comparison with the analogies of the temple preserved from ancient Syria-Palestine, in which we have preserved mostly only archaeological sources, within the Firstspace, thus physical space for similar temple types and approximate construction period (about 10th century BCE). The work also compares Solomon’s temple with Mesopotamia and Egyptian temples, especially within the symbolic (Secondspace) and lived (Thirdspace) space. As part of the Thirdspace chapter, a critical analysis of two selected biblical texts describing the Solomon’s temple was also performed. This analysis was necessary because of the ideological and power perspectives on Solomon’s temple, from the perspectives of the exile Deuteronomist and the post-exile Chronicler.
