The Past Tenses of Indicative Mood in Spanish Used in the Belles - Lettres Functional Style and its Translation to English.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe the Spanish and the English verbal system of past tenses of the indicative mood, and subsequently, to work out a comparative analysis. The theoretical part deals with a description of the past tenses of the indicative of both languages. The description is based on the studies of normative grammars (the categorical, functional and semantic point of view). Later, in the practical part, we compare the Spanish past tenses of the indicative with their English translation. The study is performed on a corpus consisting of selected novels and stories written during the period from 1980 to 2014. The aim of the analysis is to determine whether there are any systematic correspondences and differences between English and Spanish, and which resources are used most frequently for the translation to English. The analysis shows that the most common resource for the translation of the Spanish tense pretérito perfecto compuesto is the Present Perfect Simple. The pretérito perfecto simple and the petérito imperfecto tend to be translated with the Past Simple, whereas the pretérito pluscuamperfecto and the pretérito anterior were translated with the Past Perfect Simple in the majority of cases.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo popsat španělský a následně anglický verbální systém časů minulých oznamovacího způsobu a následně provést srovnávací studii. V teoretické části jsme se zabývali popisem minulých časů oznamovacího způsobu obou jazyků a to na základě gramatických studií a normativních gramatik (hledisko kategoriální, funkční a sémantické). Dále pak, v praktické části jsme srovnali španělské časy minulé oznamovacího způsobu s jejich anglickým překladem a to na korpusu vybraných španělských románů nebo povídek z období let 1980?2014. Cílem analýzy bylo zjistit, zda existují systémové korespondence, v čem se oba systémy liší a jaké prostředky jsou při překladu do angličtiny nejčastěji používány. Analýza ukázala, že pretérito perfecto compuesto bylo nejčastěji přeloženo pomocí Present Perfect Simple, zatímco pretérito perfecto simple a pretérito imperfecto prostřednictvím Past Simple. Jako nejčastější prostředek pro překlad pretérita pluscuamperfecta a pretérita anterior byl zvolen Past Perfect Simple.
