Nestorius of Constantinople. How to become a Heretic

Abstract:

Práce mapuje kořeny i průběh sporu mezi Nestoriem, patriarchou konstantinopolským, a Cyrilem, patriarchou alexandrijským. Jeho oficiální řešení se omezilo na Mariiny tituly Theotokos a Christotokos, vyrůstal ovšem z obecnějších rozdílných názorů škol, které hrály hlavní role v christologických sporech konce starověku. Na jedné straně stojí škola alexandrijská, jejíž učení a metody jsou ilustrovány na postavách Kléménta z Alexandrie, Origéna, Athanasia, Apollinaria a Cyrila. Na druhé straně je to škola antiochijská, kterou reprezentují Diodor z Tarsu, Theodor z Mopsuestie, Jan Zlatoústý, Nestorius nebo Theodoret z Cýru. Analýza pozadí střetů obou škol, který vedl až k Nestoriovu sesazení a odsouzení III. ekumenickým koncilem v Efezu roku 431, ukazuje, že se odehrával na mnoha rovinách. V prvé řadě to byl střet dvou osobností, které měly rozdílné schopnosti i zkušenosti. Svou roli hrál i fakt, že se Alexandrie i Efez musely vypořádávat s nároky patriarchátu hlavního města, který byl v kánonech konstantinopolského koncilu (381) určen „Novým Římem“. Do formování dogmatu se v neposlední řadě do velké míry projevila i politická rozhodnutí, protože nejvyšší autoritou, která mohla potvrdit či zvrátit rozhodnutí koncilů, byl sám císař. Rozbor používané terminologie Nestoriovy a Cyrilovy christologické pozice ukazuje, že mohlo jít především o nedorozumění, které vyústilo v odsouzení a následnou persekuci myšlenek i postav antiochijské školy Christologické spory patého století měly za následek nejenom proměny v dogmatu. Způsobily také nová velká církevní schizmata. Od hlavního proudu se od této chvíle oddělují monofyzitská církevní společenství i církve rozvíjející duofyzitský odkaz antiochijské christologie.

Abstract:

The Nestorian controversy was one of the greatest theological disputes in Christianity after the Arian crisis and it is also one of the best examples of what can possibly be involved in the shaping of an orthodox doctrine. It started as a local fight over the title of Mary “Theotokos” but resulted in the deposition of Nestorius as well as opposition movements dividing from the main stream church. “Theotokos” debate triggered a major clash between two theological schools. The School of Alexandria was represented by Cyril of Alexandria. His christological teaching was inspired by authors like Clement of Alexandria, Origenes, Athanasius or Apollinarius. The other one, the School of Antioch, lists names like Diodor of Tarsus, Theodor of Mopsuestia, John Chrisostom or Nestorius. One of the main reasons that influenced the result of the Nestorian controversy was the popular opinion of the masses (“vox populi”) which was shaped against Nestorius by many factors: by political mistakes of the archbishop himself, by political intrigues of his enemies and by the fact that using the “Theotokos” title which wasalready common at the time he stood up against it. Believers were already used to proceeding with their intuitive beliefs which satisfied wide range of their emotional needs and were even being encouraged by official liturgy. It was especially the devotion to Mary at a popular level in general that Nestorius had underestimated, and people saw his deposition as a victory of their own expressions of piety over the “sharp-witted and intellectualist” theology.
