Negation, NPI and scales of likelihood: an experimental study

Abstract:

V přirozeném jazyce se tradičně rozlišují tři třídy skalárních výrazů dle toho, zda se tyto výrazy spojují se silnými elementy, se slabými elementy, nebo s oběma. Tato magisterská práce si klade za cíl objasnit silnou/slabou povahu výrazů *i/ani* v češtině a *celo/niti* ve slovinštině a jejich sémantické a pragmatické vlastnosti. Formálně logické vlastnosti skalárních výrazů, a sice monotonicita prostředí, ve kterém se mohou vyskytovat, a jejich přijatelnost vzhledem k pravděpodobnostní škále, byly experimentálně testovány. Výsledky z experimentů vylučují použití některých skrytých operátorů (zavedených Crničem) a ukazují, že ambigní přístup k *even* (dle Rootha) nelze aplikovat (alespoň na české a slovinské skalární výrazy). Z toho důvodu navrhuji teoretické vysvětlení odpovídající empirickým datům, které umožňuje vysvětlit chování slovanských skalárních výrazů.

Abstract:

In a natural language, three classes of scalar particles are traditionally divided according to whether particles associate with weak elements, strong elements or with both. The aim of the master thesis is to investigate weak/strong nature of particles *i/ani* in Czech and *celo/niti* in Slovene, and their semantic and pragmatic properties. Experiments tested formally logical properties of scalar particles, namely the monotonicity of the environment in which particles occur, and their acceptability with respect to the likelihood scale. The experimental results exclude the use of some covert operators (introduced by Crnič) and show that the ambiguous approach to *even* (according to Rooth) cannot be applied (at least in the case of Czech and Slovene scalar particles). For that reason, I suggest a theoretical explanation corresponding to empirical data that helps to resolve a behavior of Slavic scalar particles.
