Impact of Sentiment on Investor’s Behavior - Behavioral Finance Perspective

Abstract:

V této dizertační práci si stanovujeme dva primární výzkumné cíle. Prvním cílem je vytvoření komplexní teoretické základny pro sentiment, jakožto důležitého behaviorálního konceptu, který si v posledních letech získal zvýšenou pozornost v oblasti financí. Na základě rozsáhlého přehledu existující literatury formulujeme širokou definici sentimentu a sumarizujeme možné přístupy k měření sentimentu spolu s empirickými výsledky, které se k jednotlivým sentimentálním proměnným vážou. Druhým cílem je jak vytvoření nových kompozitních indikátorů, které kombinují vybrané typy proměnných sentimentu, tak prozkoumání jejich vztahu ve vzorku dat z Německa a Velké Británie s budoucími výnosy různých tržních indexů v těchto zemích. K dosažení výsledků druhého cíle byl použit empirický rámec se třemi hypotézami. Za prvé jsme, v souladu s teorií pozitivní zpětné vazby, našli silný důkaz, že kompozitní indikátor sentimentu, který je tvořen proměnnými z dotazníkových šetření, pozitivně ovlivňuje budoucí výnosy akciových indexů obou sledovaných krajin až do horizontu 12 měsíců. Tento výsledek nebyl potvrzen pro složený indikátor sentimentu, který je tvořen finančními proxy pro sentiment, a ani pro složený indikátor sentimentu, který je sestaven z mixu obou typů ukazatelů – proměnnými z dotazníkových šetření a finančními proxy pro sentiment. To naznačuje, že různé manifestace sentimentu ovlivňují budoucí výnosy indexů akciového trhu odlišně. Za druhé, tato studie odhalila, že výnosy indexů akciového trhu podléhají, podobně jako výnosy jednotlivých akcií a portfolií, průřezovým účinkům. Jinými slovy, indexy složené z firem s malou tržní kapitalizací jsou nejvíce ovlivněné sentimentem. Dále v této dizertaci rozlišujeme dva prvky sentimentu, lokální a evropský, abychom mohli prozkoumat kontaminaci účinků sentimentu přes hranice. Zjistili jsme, že evropský prvek sentimentu vykazuje signifikantní efekt na budoucí tržní výnosy v obou studovaných zemích, zatímco efekt lokální části sentimentu byl nalezen pouze v německém vzorku. Celkově, teoretické i empirické výstupy této práce přispívají k existující akademické literatuře a přinášejí nové pohledy na téma sentimentu na finančních trzích.

Abstract:

This thesis has two primary research objectives. Firstly, it delivers a comprehensive theoretical foundation for sentiment as the behavioral concept, which has earned increasing attention in the field of finance in recent years. It reviews the extensive set of existing literature with intention to provide a coherent definition of sentiment and the summary of its available measures together with empirical results surrounding the relation between sentiment and market returns. The second objective is to construct the novel composite sentiment indicators out of selected individual sentiment measures and to examine its in-sample relation with returns of various stock market indices in two important European countries, Germany and the United Kingdom. The framework of three empirical hypotheses was used to deliver the results. Firstly, in lines with the positive-feedback theory, we find a strong evidence that composite sentiment measures constructed from population surveys positively affect future returns of countries’ stock market indices up to 12 months. The evidence for composite indices that were factored by financial proxies for sentiment or indices that were formed by the mix of survey-based sentiment and financial proxies, turned weak or was absent. This suggests that the different manifestations of sentiment affect future returns of stock market indices differently. Secondly, we demonstrated the cross-sectional effects of sentiment, concretely, that small-cap indices are more prone to sentiment than "more-capitalized" indices. Lastly, we distinguished between country-specific (local) and European (global) element of sentiment in order to examine the contagion of the sentiment effects across borders. We found that the later exhibits significant sentiment-return relation in both studied countries, while the evidence for country-specific sentiment was found only in German sample. Overall, both theoretical and empirical outputs of this thesis contribute to the existing academic literature and bring new insights to the topic of sentiment in the financial markets.
