Narrators and Unreliability in Jeannette Winterson's Gut Symmetries and Antoine Volodine's Dondog

Abstract:

Cieľom magisterskej diplomovej práce je analyzovať rozprávačov a ich nespoľahlivosť v diele Jeanette Winterson Gut Symmetries a Antoinea Volodina Dondog. V methodologickej časti práce v skratke hovoríme o morfologickej literárnej analýze, definícii rozprávača podľa Gérarda Genetta a Seymoura Chatmana. K nim následne pripájame pojmy fokalizácia a funkcia rozprávača. Ďalšia časť je venovaná nespoľahlivosti, ktorú analyzujeme vďaka Richardsonovým konceptom : "rozprávačovi obsahujúceho množstov postáv", (ktorého delí na centrifugálneho a centripetálneho rozprávača) rovnako ako aj na "priehľadného rozprávača". Analytická časť sa zaoberá aplikáciou týchto pojmov na obe zmieňované diela a výstupom analytickej časti sú schémy popisujúce vzťahy medzi rozprávačmi, ktoré zároveň poukazujú na nespoľahlivosť medzi rozprávačmi.

Abstract:

The objective of the master´s diploma thesis is to analyse the narrators and their unreliabilty in Jeanette Winterson´s Gut Symmetries adn Antoine Volodine´s Dondog. In the methodological part I briefly discuss a morphological literary analysis, the definition of narrator according to Gérard Genette and Seymour Chatman. Therefore, I add the notion of focalization and the narrator´s functions. The next part is devoted to the concept of unreliability, that is analysed thanks to Richardson´s conception of "multiperson narrator" ( who is consequently divided into a centrifugal and a centripetal narrator) and transparent narrator. The analytic part uses these notions to analyse both aforementioned works. To sum up the analytical part the schemata, that describe the relations between the narrators and indicate their unreliability, are proposed.
