Analysis of Translating Proper Names in Fantasy Literature

Abstract:

This master thesis focuses on the translation of proper names in selected works of fantasy literature. Fantasy, a genre known for its unique characters, fictional worlds, and invented languages, poses a significant challenge for translators. The aim of this thesis is to explore the methodology of translating proper names, specifically focusing on their semantic aspect. The thesis is structured into six chapters. The first chapter of the theoretical part delves into the fantasy genre itself, followed by a study of translation studies and the significance of focusing on the reader during the translation process. The subsequent chapter is dedicated to the translation of proper names, covering literary onomastics, lexical equivalence, and various translation methods. The latter part of the thesis involves an in-depth analysis of selected proper names. The thesis is written in English.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá překladem vlastních jmen ve vybraných dílech fantasy literatury. Fantasy literatura, jakožto žánr plný jedinečných postav, fiktivních světů a smyšlených jazyků, je velkým oříškem pro překladatele. Cílem této práce je prozkoumat metodiku překladu vlastních jmen. Důraz je kladen na semantickou stránku, tudíž na zachování jejich významu. Práce je rozdělena do šesti kapitol. První kapitola teoretické části se zabývá samotným fantasy žánrem. Druhá se pak věnuje translatologii a důležitosti orientace na čtenáře při překladu. Následuje kapitola věnovaná překladu vlastních jmen, zahrnující úvod do literární onomastiky a lexikální ekvivalence a popis metod překladu. Další část práce se zabývá analýzou vlastních jmen ve vybraných dílech fantasy literatury. V rámci této analýzy je důkladně analyzována část vybraných vlastních jmen. Práce je psána v angličtině.
