Two types of collecives: an experiment

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá chováním různých druhů kolektivních jmen, především klasických kolektiv a kolektiv s topologickými inferencemi, tzn. swarm kolektiv. Klasická kolektiva, která byla představena v článku Chrise Barkera již v roce 1992, byla následně odlišena od swarm kolektiv ve studii Roberta Hendersona (2017), poskytující metody k rozlišení těchto kolektiv (v angličtině). Tyto metody byly v této práci následně užity pro češtinu. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na kolektivitu a kolektivní modifikátory, poté následuje úvod do kolektivních jmen a nakonec je představeno testování klasických a swarm kolektiv podle Hendersonova vzoru, ke kterým se připojí ještě třetí skupina českých kolektiv s předponou sou-. Praktická část práce se věnuje experimentu, který se bude snažit ověřit, zdali se klasická kolektiva odlišují od swarm kolektiv jako v angličtině, a zároveň se pokusí zjistit, jakému z těchto kolektiv se podobá skupina českých kolektiv s předponou sou-.

Abstract:

This bachelor‘s thesis deals with the behaviour of certain kinds of collective entities, especially group nouns and nouns with topological inferences, so-called swarm nouns. Group nouns, introduced by Chris Barker in his 1992 article, were distinguished from swarm nouns in Robert Henderson’s study (2017) that offers methods to differentiate these kinds of collectives (in English). These methods were subsequently used for Czech in this thesis. The theoretical part is focused on collectivity and collective modifiers, then there is an introduction to group nouns and finally Henderson’s testing that distinguishes group and swarm nouns, eventually joined by Czech collectives with the sou-prefix. The practical part is dedicated to an experiment that will attempt to determine if group nouns differ from swarm nouns as in English. The experiment will, at the same time, attempt to determine whether the sou-collectives are more similar to group nouns or swarm nouns.
