Abstract:

This study explores the historical and socio-political development during the periods of Old and Middle English, examining linguistic transformations that occurred in the English language during this time. It focuses on analyzing the "Chancery Standard," a writing norm from Middle English, comparing it with the "Winchester Standard" from the era of Old English to assess its historical validity. The analysis begins with Roman Britain and traces historical events up to the Norman invasion. In the practical part, the study compares both linguistic stages in the context of socio-political factors and describes differences in word order, inflection, spelling, and general language usage in detail. The analysis results imply that Old and Middle English share similar standardization process, and that some linguistic elements from Old English persisted into the Middle English period due to the inability of scribes to find a suitable replacement. The study concludes that the "Winchester Standard" should be recognized as a legitimate norm of Old English.

Abstract:

Tato studie se zabývá historickým a sociopolitickým vývojem v éře Staré a Střední angličtiny a zkoumá lingvistické proměny, které se v anglickém jazyce v tomto období odehrály. Práce se zaměřuje na analýzu "Chancery Standard", což je psací norma ze Střední angličtiny, a srovnává ji s "Winchester Standardem" z doby Staré angličtiny, aby posoudila jeho historickou platnost. Výzkum začíná v době Římské Británie a sleduje dějinné události až po normanskou invazi. V praktické části se práce věnuje srovnání obou jazykových stadií v kontextu sociopolitických faktorů a detailně popisuje rozdíly ve slovosledu, skloňování, pravopisu a obecném užívání jazyka. Z výsledků analýzy vyplývá, že Stará a Střední angličtina sdílejí podobný pokus o standardizaci a některé jazykové prvky Staré angličtiny se udržely až do doby Střední angličtiny, kvůli neschopnosti písařů nalézt vyhovující náhradu. Studie dospívá k závěru, že "Winchester Standard" by měl být uznán jako legitimní norma Staré angličtiny.
