Mineralogy and genesis of banded iron ores of the Desná Crystalline Complex

Abstract:

V severovýchodní části Českého masivu jsou ve svrchnoproterozoických biotitických pararulách desenského krystalinika uložena malá ložiska páskovaných železných rud. Rudniny a okolní horniny byly studovány z hlediska variability jejich minerálních asociací, chemického složení jednotlivých minerálů, složení fluid a celkového chemismu, za účelem odhalení jejich geneze, vzájemného vztahu a metamorfního vývoje. Páskované železné rudy desenského krystalinika jsou složeny především z magnetitu, křemene a variabilního množství dalších minerálů (granátu, amfibolu, biotitu, chloritu, minerálů skupiny epidotu, ilmenitu, apatitu, plagioklasu a kalcitu). Hlavní pozornost byla věnována vzorkům bohatým almandin-spessartinovým granátem (t.j. granátovcům). Na základě rozdílů v chemickém složení a zonálnosti granátových zrn byly ve studovaných vzorcích rozlišeny čtyři typy granátů. Granátovce prostorově spjaté s horizonty křemen-magnetitových rud mají stejné litologické, petrologické a geochemické charakteristiky, jako horniny označované pojmem „coticules“, které se ve světě často vyskytují právě v asociaci s železnými rudami typu „BIF“. Protolit studovaných hornin vznikl pravděpodobně v pozdním proterozoiku, během období podmořské hydrotermální aktivity, pomocí procesů diferenciální precipitace Fe a Mn z rudonosných roztoků a současně mísením s okolním klastickým materiálem. Protolit byl následně postižen polyfázovou metamorfózou a dosáhl podmínek amfibolitové facie během pre-variské (M1) i variské metamorfní etapy. Pro variskou metamorfózu (M2) byly odhadnuty vrcholné P-T podmínky T ~540–580 °C a P ~600 MPa, během metamorfózy M3 došlo ke snížení tlaku o 200–300 MPa, přičemž teploty nepřekročily ~600 °C (horní teplotní limit metamorfózy M2). Poslední metamorfní událost M4 byla spojena s hydratačními reakcemi v pozdních fázích variské orogeneze a vyznačovala se T ~150–300 °C při P < 200 MPa.

Abstract:

Small deposits of banded iron ores occur in the Upper Proterozoic biotite paragneisses of the Desná Crystalline Complex in the NE part of the Bohemian Massif. The iron ores and adjacent rocks were studied in terms of the variability of their mineral association, the chemical composition of minerals, the composition of fluids and the whole-rock chemical composition, in order to reveal their genesis, relationships and the metamorphic evolution. Banded iron ores of the Desná Crystalline Complex consist mainly of magnetite, quartz and variable amount of other minerals (garnet, amphibole, biotite, chlorite, epidote-group minerals, ilmenite, apatite, plagioclase and calcite). The main attention was dedicated to the almandine-spessartine garnet-rich samples (i.e., garnetites). Four types of garnet were distinguished on the basis of the chemical composition and the zonation patterns in the studied samples. The garnetites spatially associated with the banded quartz-magnetite ores have similar lithological, petrological and geochemical characteristic as rocks known as “coticules”, which often occur in association with iron ores of the “BIF” type in the world. The protolith of the studied rocks was formed probably during periods of submarine hydrothermal activity in the Late Proterozoic by differential precipitation of Fe and Mn from ore-bearing solutions and by mixing of the precipitates with the detritic material. Subsequently the protolith underwent polyphase metamorphism reaching the amphibolite facies grade during the pre-Variscan (M1) and Variscan periods. The P-T conditions estimated for the peak Variscan metamorphism (M2) are T ~540–580 °C and P ~600 MPa, the M3 is characterized by decrease of pressure by 200–300 MPa, whereas the temperature did not exceed 600 °C (the upper temperature limit of the M2 metamorphism). Last metamorphic event M4 related to the hydration reactions which occurred during the late-stage of the Variscan orogenesis is characterized by T ~150–300 °C at P < 200 MPa.
