Architecture according to Paolo Soleri: utopia or a solution?

Abstract:

Paolo Soleri zemřel v roce 2013. Problémy, pro které se Soleri svou architekturou snažil najít řešení, jsou však i dnes aktuální a jeho odkaz dál šíří celá řada architektů, kteří se jeho prací nechali inspirovat. Ačkoli je Paolo Soleri velmi populární ve Spojených státech, v česky psaných zdrojích o tomto architektu mnoho informací nenajdeme. Cílem předkládané práce je tuto skutečnost změnit a architektovo dílo představit v ucelené podobě také českému čtenáři. Soleriho tvorba zahrnuje jak realizace jednotlivých staveb, tak i množství neuskutečněných projektů. Architekt je dobře známý také díky svému konceptu arcology, ve kterém spojuje architekturu s principy ekologie. Přestože zmíněný koncept pochází již z konce 60. let, nabývá dnes na významu a objevuje se v řadě návrhů, jejichž projektanti se právě Solerim nechali inspirovat. Předkládaný text se věnuje Soleriho dílu nejprve v teoretické rovině. Snaží se představit různé osobnosti, které jeho tvorbu ovlivnily, principy, z nichž architekt při své práci vycházel, ale také samotný koncept arcology. Na popisu realizací jednotlivých staveb i plánovaných projektech je poté ukázáno, jak může vypadat převedení těchto teoretických principů do praxe. Pro ilustraci jsou použity také projekty dalších architektů. Text je zakončen hodnocením, které se pokouší odpovědět na otázku, zda architektura podle Soleriho principů může být řešením, nebo zda zůstane pouhou utopickou představou.

Abstract:

Paolo Soleri died in 2013. The problems for which Soleri was trying to find a solution with the help of architecture are still topical and his legacy is carried on by many architects who let inspire themselves by Soleri’s work. Although the architect is very popular in the United States, there is not much information about Paolo Soleri in the sources written in Czech. The purpose of the submitted thesis is to change this reality and to present the architect’s work in its comprehensive form to the Czech reader as well. Soleri’s work includes realizations of individual buildings, as well as many unrealized projects. The architect is also well-known for his concept of arcology, in which he connects architecture with the principles of ecology. Despite the fact that the concept dates back to the late 60s, it acquires importance nowadays, as it appears in many projects whose designers are inspired by Soleri. The submitted text at first discusses Soleri’s work from the theoretical point of view. It endeavours to introduce different personalities who had influenced his work, principles which Soleri based his work on, and the concept of arcology itself. The descriptions of the realizations of individual buildings and unrealized projects serve as an example of how the theoretical principles may look like in reality. Projects of other architects are provided to illustrate this as well. The text is concluded with an assessment which endeavours to answer the question if the architecture according to Soleri’s principles may be a solution or if it remains only a utopian vision.
