Limits of philosophy in Judaism: three letters against philosophy from 13th to 15th century

Abstract:

Středověký židovský svět byl fenoménem, jehož náboženská a zároveň intelektuální zanícenost vedla ke střetům, které pomohli definovat a ovlivnit celou jednu (nejen) akademickou oblast: židovskou filosofii. Tato disertační práce, odvolávající se na přiložené autorské překlady tří dopisů proti filosofii (jmenovitě dopis Meira ben Todrose Ha-Leviho Abulafii učencům Lunelu, korespondence Judy ibn Alfakara s Davidem Kimhi, a anonymní dopis proti filosofii) a jejich analýzu, zkoumá problematiku židovské filosofie jakožto střetu racionálního univerza s univerzem náboženským, z něhož posléze vyvozuje teorii o konfliktu mezi dvěma různými a různě vytvořenými identitami, přičemž tento konflikt nechápe v negativním, tj. destruktivním slova smyslu, ale naopak jakožto pozitivní konflikt intelektuálně inspirativní jak pro historii, tak pro současnost.

Abstract:

The Jewish medieval world was a phenomenon which religious and at the same time intelectual dedication led to clashes that helped to define and influence a whole (not only) academical area: Jewish philosophy. This dissertation, referring to the attached author's translations of the three letters against philosophy (namely Meir ben Todrose Ha-levi Abulafia's letter to scholars of Lunel, Juda ibn Alfakar correspondence with David Kimhi, and anonymous letter against philosophy) and their analysis, examines the issues of Jewish philosophy as a collision between the rational universe and the religious universe, from which it eventually deduces the theory of conflict between two different and differently formed identities. This conflict is not meant to be percieved as a negative, i.e. destructive sense but rather as a positive conflict intellectually inspiring for both the history and the present.
