An Analysis of Review Text Translations from Czech into English

Abstract:

This paper deals with the equivalence of genre and language of translations of online watch reviews, which were produced by amateur translators. The texts analysed are used as a promotion for the goods sold, i.e. watches. Criteria for this equivalence are set on the lexical, grammatical, pragmatic, stylistic, and textual levels. The analysis was done using the comparative method by using Czech and English versions of an article. The content of the English version was compared not only to the Czech text, but also to the criteria which were set. Further, examples of the translators' choices are provided along with the justification for their correctness and suggestion. The study shows that the original texts are not equivalent to the translated ones and that the criteria have been breached by the translators, the pragmatic and stylistic layer being the most problematic. This suggests that the translators did not take into consideration the authors' intention or the target audience as the texts are almost literally translated with no regard for different cultures or even the differences between languages.

Tato studie se zabývá ekvivalencí překladů internetových recenzí hodinek, které byly vypracovány amatérskými překladateli. Texty, které jsou analyzované, slouží jako propagace prodávaného zboží, tj. hodinek. Tato ekvivalence je podmíněna kritérii, která jsou nastavena v úrovních lexikální, gramatické, pragmatické, stylistické, a textuální. K analýze byla použita komparativní metoda za využití českých i anglických verzí článku. Obsah anglického článku byl porovnán nejen s původním českým textem, ale i s danými kritérii. Následně jsou uvedeny příklady některých překladateli zvolených řešení, komentář k jejich správnosti s odůvodněním a návrhem případné správnější možnosti. Studie prokázala, že původní texty nejsou ekvivalentní s texty přeloženými a stanovená kritéria byla porušena, přičemž úroveň pragmatická a stylistická byly ty nejproblémovější. Tento výsledek naznačuje, že překladatelé při práci nevzali v potaz ani autorovy úmysly, ani cílové čtenáře, a to z důvodu takřka doslovného překladu bez zřetele na rozdílné kultury či dokonce rozdíly jazykové.
