Between Arab and American: Exploring Diaspora, Love, and Symbolism in Gibran Kahlil's The Prophet

Abstract:

Despite Arab-Americans being a significant part of the American population, their diaspora literature has only recently started being acknowledged as a distinct ethnic voice in American literature. Arab-American diaspora literature expresses the nostalgia felt for the separation from the homelands. These authors made their tongues and pens the best means of expressing what was trembling in their presence, the feelings of nostalgia, displacement, longing for their homeland, and struggles with identity. This thesis aims to analyse Gibran Kahlil's The Prophet, a seminal work of Arab American literature. It will examine the themes, symbols, and socio-political contexts present in the book. Through an in-depth exploration of Gibran's poetry, it also aims to shed light on the intersections of identity, culture, and human experience that are present in this timeless masterpiece by contextualizing Gibran's work within its historical and socio-political framework.

Abstract:

Přestože Arabští Američané tvoří významnou část americké populace, literatura jejich diaspory začala být teprve nedávno uznávána jako samostatný etnický hlas v americké literatuře. Literatura arabsko-americké diaspory vyjadřuje nostalgii po odloučení od vlasti. Tito autoři učinili ze svých jazyků nejlepší prostředek k vyjádření toho, co se v jejich přítomnosti chvělo, pocity nostalgie, vysídlení, stesku po vlasti a boje s identitou. Cílem této práce je analyzovat The Prophet od Gibrana Kahlila, stěžejní dílo arabsko-americké literatury. Bude zkoumat témata, symboly a společensko-politické souvislosti. Prostřednictvím zkoumání Gibranovy poezie si rovněž klade za cíl osvětlit průsečíky identity, kultury a lidské zkušenosti, které jsou v tomto nadčasovém díle přítomny, a to prostřednictvím kontextualizace Gibranova díla v jeho historickém a sociálně-politickém rámci.
