Influence of metamorphosis on behaviour and physiology in amphibians

Abstract:

V životní historii organismů s komplexními životními cykly představuje metamorfóza jednu z ústředních událostí. Jejím vlivem se zabývají dvě hypotézy, jenž se v pohledu na význam metamorfózy podstatně liší. Dle hypotézy syndromu životního tempa je metamorfóza pouze nezbytnou událostí, během které nedochází k výraznějšímu ovlivnění behaviorálních a fyziologických znaků. Na druhé straně hypotéza adaptivního rozpojení předpokládá značný účinek metamorfózy na tyto dva znaky životní historie. Cílem této práce bylo testovat vliv metamorfózy a rozdílných teplotních režimů na rychlost klidového metabolismu a explorační chování u larev a mláďat čolka horského. Výsledky ukázaly nápadné rozdíly v individuální úrovni klidového metabolismu a pohybové aktivity u larválního a juvenilního stádia čolka horského, což je v souladu s hypotézou adaptivního rozpojení. Vliv rozdílných teplotních režimů nebyl signifikantní. Toto zjištění ukazuje na značnou plasticitu fyziologických a behaviorálních znaků. Takováto vlastnost může být zvláště důležitá v kontextu současné klimatické změny.

Abstract:

Metamorphosis is one of the central events in the life history of organisms with complex life cycles. Two differing hypotheses are trying to predict the range of its influence. According to pace of life syndrome, metamorphosis is essential event, even though its impact on behaviour and physiology is little. On the other hand, adaptive decoupling hypothesis assumes a considerable effect of metamorphosis on these two life history traits. The aim of this study was to test the effect of metamorphosis and different temperature regimes on resting metabolic rate and exploratory behaviour in larvae and metamorphosed individuals of mountain newt. The results show markable differences in the individual level of resting metabolic rate and locomotor activity in the larval and juvenile stage of mountain newt. This is in concordance with adaptive decoupling hypothesis. The influence of different temperature regimes was negligible. This finding indicates significant plasticity of physiological and behavioral traits. Such attribute may be particularly important int the context of current climate change.
