Foreign fighters in dark tourism

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem zahraničních bojovníků jako turistů v temném cestovním ruchu. V teoretické část je představen nejen temný cestovní ruch, ale i jeho podkategorie válečný cestovní ruch, horký válečný turismus a také dobrodružný cestovní ruch. V analytické části je zmapována a analyzována situace zahraničních bojovníků v Sýrii, Iráku a na Ukrajině. Cílem je zjistit umístění zahraničních bojovníků v rámci temného turismu a přispět tak k lepšímu pochopení konceptu temného turismu. V neposlední řadě je cílem i přispět k diskuzi o jeho povaze, která je vedena ve vědeckých kruzích. Diskuze se vede o tom, zda je temný turismus moderním západním fenoménem. Autoři podporující tuto myšlenku tvrdí, že lidé místa temného turismu nenavštěvují kvůli jejich spojení se smrtí. Důvodem návštěvy může být fakt, že místa jsou součástí širších výletů plánovaných cestovními kancelářemi. Jiní autoři naopak prosazují myšlenku temného turismu jako fenoménu s dlouholetou tradicí. Turisté podle nich navštěvují tato místa právě kvůli jejich spojení se smrtí. Studium turistických motivací je proto žádoucí.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of foreign fighters as tourists in dark tourism. In the theoretical part, I will introduce not only dark tourism, but also its subcategories: war tourism, hot war tourism and also adventure tourism. In the analytical part, the situation of foreign fighters in Syria, Iraq and Ukraine will be mapped and analyzed. The aim is to discover the positions of foreign fighters within dark tourism therefore to contribute to a better understanding of the concept of dark tourism. Last but not least, the objective is also to contribute to the debate about the nature of dark tourism, which is held in the scientific community. The main question consists in understanding whether dark tourism is a modern western phenomenon. The authors who promote this idea think that people do not visit dark tourism places because of its relation with death. The reason of the visit can be that those places are parts of a wider trips which are planned by travel agencies. On the contrary, the other authors promote the idea of dark tourism as being a phenomenon with long time tradition. According to them the tourists visit those places mainly because of the association with death. Therefore, the research of the tourist motivations is required.
