Remembering everyday experience through the prism of neuroticism

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vztah mezi retrospektivním hodnocením událostí a rysem neuroticismu. Dle studie Barrettové (1997) uváděli lidé s vyšším neuroticismem při zpětném hodnocení, že zažívali více negativních emocí, než reportovali při momentálním hodnocení. Cílem výzkumu bylo ověřit tato zjištění pomocí rozdílné metodologie s rozlišením příjemných a nepříjemných událostí z každodenního života. Participanti vyplňovali sérii dotazníků, kde po dobu týdne hodnotili dvě události ze svého dne na emoční škále na bázi dotazníku PANAS. Po sedmi dnech jim byly vylosovány dvě z těchto událostí, a oni se snažili vybavit si své minulé hodnocení. Zároveň jim byla změřena míra neuroticismu. Celkově se pracovalo s daty od 92 participantů. Výsledky nalezly podporu pro obě hypotézy, lidé s vyšší mírou neuroticismu hodnotili zpětně události více negativně, ať už byly příjemné či nepříjemné. U nepříjemných událostí byl tento vztah o něco silnější.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the relationship between retrospective event evaluation and the trait of neuroticism. According to Barrett's (1997) study, people with higher neuroticism reported experiencing more negative emotions on retrospective appraisal than they reported on momentary appraisal. The aim of the research was to test these findings using a different methodology with a distinction between pleasant and unpleasant events in everyday life. Participants completed a series of questionnaires where they rated two events from their day on an emotional scale based on the PANAS questionnaire over the course of a week. After seven days, two of these events were chosen, and they tried to recall their past ratings. They were also meas-ured for neuroticism. In total, I worked with data from 92 participants. The results found support for both hypotheses, people with higher levels of neuroticism evaluated the past events more negatively, whether they were pleasant or unpleasant. This relationship was slightly stronger for unpleasant events.
