Ethics of Photojournalism

Abstract:

Etika zpravodajské fotografie Diplomová práce se zabývá etikou novinářské, konkrétněji zpravodajské fotografie. Skládá se z teoretické, metodologické a empirické části. Teoretická část poukazuje na absenci hlubší diskuse na dané téma a zdůvodňuje jeho naléhavost. Ukotvuje problematiku v akademickém diskurzu, konkretizuje etické aspekty týkající se zpravodajské fotografie a kriticky reflektuje stávající etické normy českých tištěných médií. V metodologické části pak autorka na základě teoretických poznatků a již existujících etických kodexů (vztahujících se k žurnalistické praxi obecně) vytváří specifický etický kodex určený k regulaci pořizování a používání zpravodajských fotografií v tištěných médiích. Dále zde stanovuje výzkumný vzorek (obrazové zpravodajství války v Iráku a vládní krize 2005 v MF Dnes, Blesku, Týdnu a Reflexu) a konkretizuje metodu kritické reflexe daného vzorku. V empirické části pak autorka výzkumný vzorek konfrontuje s vytvořeným kodexem, čímž testuje jeho aplikovatelnost a zároveň poukazuje na prohřešky proti etickým normám, jichž se daná média v rámci obrazové prezentace daných kauz nejčastěji dopouštěla. Závěrečná část práce, založená na hloubkových rozhovorech s pěti českými fotoreportéry, pak objasňuje přístup fotoreportérů k etickým aspektům jejich práce a poukazuje na rozdílnosti v praktickém a teoretickém pohledu na danou problematiku. Abstract:

Ethics of Photojournalism The dissertation addresses the issue of photography ethics in the field of journalism and of news coverage in particular. It is composed of a theoretical, a methodological and an empirical part. The theoretical part casts light on the absence of a substantial debate on the subject and justifies its urgency. It situates the problem in the academic discourse, concretizes ethical aspects related to journalistic photography and devotes itself to a critical reflection on the current ethical standards of the Czech press. In the methodological part, the author develops a specific ethical code with the aim of regulating the shooting and use of news photographs in the press. This ethical code is based on theoretical knowledge and ethical codes already existing and applied in journalism in general. An experimental sample is then determined (news photographs of the war in Iraq and of the 2005 Czech government crisis taken from MF Dnes, Blesk, Týden and Reflex) and the methodolgy of critical reflection to be applied on this sample is established. In the empirical part, the author compares the experimental sample to the code that she developped, thereby trying out its applicability. At the same time, she also points out the frequent offenses to ethical standards in the photographic representation of the two events by the chosen media. The conclusion of the study, based on in-depth interviews with five Czech photojournalists, explains the approach of professionals regarding the ethical aspects of their work and indicates the differences between the practical and theoretical points of view on the subject.
