Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá americkými presidentskými volbami v britském a americkém tisku. Pro účely této analýzy je vybráno třicet článků z amerických a britských novin, které jsou podrobeny zkoumání na několika úrovních. První úroveň se týká jazyka použitého v novinách. Zda americké téma neovlivňuje použitý jazyk, především v britských novinách. Další úroveň řeší prezentaci aktérů v novinách. Tato analýza je založena na Van Leeuwenově teorii kategorizace sociálních aktérů. Je porovnáváno, zda se všeobecně liší prezentace kandidátů, zda se liší podle politické preference a podle země původu novin, pro které byly články psány. Poslední úroveň zkoumání se týká hodnocení kandidátů v novinách. Tato analýza vychází z J. R. Martinovi teorie „Posouzení“. Je zkoumáno, zda noviny vyjadřují své postoje k jednotlivým kandidátům a zda se tyto postoje liší dle politické preference novin a původu novin. Je posuzováno, zda se v novinách vyskytuje předpojatost.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with American presidential election in British and American press. Thirty articles from British and American press were chosen for the purposes of this analysis. These articles are examined from several points of view. Firstly, the language used is analyzed. Whether the American nature of the topic discussed influences the language used, mainly in British press. Secondly, representation of the social actors is analyzed. This analysis is based on Van Leeuwen´s approach to categorization of social actors. Possible differences between the representation of the candidates (based on the stance and country of origin of the newspapers) are analyzed. Lastly, evaluation of the candidates is analyzed. This analysis is based on J. R. Martin´s Appraisal theory. The existence of evaluation of the candidates and its differences according to the stance and country of origin is examined. Bias in newspapers is also analyzed.
