Mourning Culture, Remembrance and Death: A Case Study of Victorian Tradition and its Contemporary Legacy

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem kultury truchlení, vzpomínání a vnímání smrti, přičemž analyzuje a interpretuje klíčové znaky této kultury tak, jak se ustálily ve viktoriánské společnosti a jakým způsobem jsou reflektovány v současnosti. Hlavním účelem práce je poskytnutí komplexního pohledu na vývoj upomínkových praktik a prokázání kontinuity lidské potřeby materializovat vzpomínky na zesnulé. Jako výchozí bod je zvoleno viktoriánské období, které je zde zachyceno jako éra fascinace smrtí charakteristická specifickými rituály, mezi něž patří přísně dodržované nošení smutku, pořizování posmrtných fotografií či výroba vlasových šperků. Z metodologického hlediska se práce opírá o analýzu současné literatury, dobového tisku a konkrétních příkladů materiální kultury. Současná česká kultura a její podoba smutečních a vzpomínkových rituálů, předmětů a kontextuální společenské vnímání jsou komparovány s jejími historickými předobrazy a vysvětleno je i pozadí, které vedlo k jejich transformaci. Důraz je kladen na psychologický rozbor, náboženský vliv na proměnu společnosti a analýzu sémiotickou. Hlavní hypotézou práce je tvrzení, že se současná společnost po období radikální tabuizace smrti ve 20. století navrací k tradičním formám materiální vzpomínky. Práce utváří ucelený obraz o kontinuitě lidské potřeby zachovávat si památku na zesnulé a ukazuje, jak moderní technologie umožňují transformovat historické tradice do nových forem trvalých památek, čímž potvrzuje hypotézu.

Abstract:

This Master's thesis explores the mourning culture, remembrance, and the perception of death, analyzing and interpreting the key characteristics of this culture as established in Victorian society and how they are reflected in the present day. The main purpose of the thesis is to trace the evolution of commemorative practices and demonstrate the continuity of the human need to materialize memories of the deceased. The Victorian era serves as the starting point, depicted here as a period of fascination with death, characterized by specific rituals such as strict mourning dress codes, postmortem photography and mourning hair jewelry. The thesis is based on the analysis of contemporary literature, historical documents, and specific examples of material culture. This thesis compares historical practices with modern Czech mourning rituals and examines the societal shifts that led to their transformation. Emphasis is placed on psychological aspects, the influence of religion and faith on society and the analysis of symbolism and semiotics. The main hypothesis of the thesis suggests that after a period of radically tabooing death in the 20th century, contemporary society is returning to traditional forms of material remembrance. The thesis demonstrates the enduring human need to preserve the memory of the deceased. It illustrates how modern technologies help translate historical traditions into new forms of lasting memorials, ultimately confirming the initial hypothesis.
