Úloha reaktivních metabolitů kyslíku (RMK) v organismu je diskutabilní. Jejich nadbytek je škodlivý tím, že reagují a pozměňují všechny druhy buněčných biomolekul, působí cytotoxicky a vyvolávají mutagenezi. Na druhou stranu byl pozorován jejich vliv u řady biochemických a molekulárních procesů jakými jsou proliferace, apoptóza a diferenciace. The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in organisms is controversial. Excess ROS are harmful because they react with and modify all classes of cellular biomolecules that cause cytotoxicity and mutagenic damage.
