Self-adjoint operators and their spectrum: general theory and some non-classical examples.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je studovat spektra diferenciálních operátorů a ukázat závislost spektra na definičním oboru operátoru. Práce zahrnuje přehled základních vlastností samosdružených operátorů a jejich spektra. V poslední části představíme Friedrichův přístup, který nám umožňuje konstruovat samosdružené operátory odpovídající zdola ohraničeným sesquilineárním formám. Věnujeme se konkrétnímu případu: zdola ohraničeným Schrödingerovým operátorům s konečným počtem ? potenciálů. Dokážeme, že tyto operátory jsou zdola ohraničené a budeme studovat jejich spektrum. Dále ukážeme, že za určitých předpokladů dostaneme ohraničenost z dola i pro nekonečné množství ? potenciálů. Na druhou stranu ukažeme také příklad neohraničeného ale esenciálně samosdruženého operátoru.

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis is to study the spectrum of some differential operators and to show the influence of the domain on their spectrum. The first part of work includes an overview of basic properties of self-adjoint operators and their spectra. Then we introduce the so-called Friedrichs approach, which allows to construct the self-adjoint operators corresponding to the bounded from below sesquilinear forms. The last part of the work includes the study of some concrete case: Schrödinger operators with finite number of ? potentials. We prove that such operators are bounded from below and investigate their spectrum. Next we show that under some suitable assumptions even in case of infinite number of ? potentials one gets the boundedness from below. As an opposite effect we present an example of unbounded from below but essentially self-adjoint operator.
