Corpus as a Source of Data for Systematic Description of Czech Conjugation in Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

Abstract:

Jedním z cílů této práce je poukázat na možnosti využití korpusu ve výuce jazyků. Odlišujeme dva základní přístupy: metoda deduktivní, tj. korpus jako zdroj dat pro výuku (např. pro prezentaci gramatiky), a induktivní, tj. práce studentů přímo s korpusovým vyhledávačem (Data Driven Learning). Hlavní část práce vychází z první metody a využívá Českého národního korpusu (SYN2000) jako zdroje dat pro frekvenční analýzu českých sloves. Výsledky následně srovnává s popisem konjugace v českých mluvnicích a její prezentací v učebnicích češtiny jako cizího jazyka. Práce se soustředí převážně na roztřídění sloves do tříd a vzorů, ale věnuje se i dubletám ve slovesných tvarech a nejfrekventovanějším nepravidelným slovesům. V závěru se snaží odpovědět na otázku, které třídy by bylo efektivní pro výuku češtiny jako cizího jazyka ponechat a které naopak pro malý počet sloves a jejich neproduktivnost či nepravidelnost prezentovat jako nepravidelná slovesa.

Abstract:

One of the aims of this thesis is to point out the use of the Czech National Corpus for language teaching. There are two main principles: the deductive method, i.e. using the corpus as a source for teaching (e.g. presentation of grammar), and the inductive one, i.e. the students working with the corpus search engine (Data Driven Learning). The main part of this thesis deals with the first method and makes use of the Czech National Corpus (SYN2000) as the source of data for a frequency analysis of Czech verbs. The results are then compared with the description of conjugation in Czech grammar books and its presentation in textbooks of Czech as a foreign language. The thesis mainly focuses on classifying verbs according to classes and patterns. Moreover, it also deals with doublets in verbal forms and the most common irregular verbs. In the conclusion it is trying to answer the question which verb classes should be retained for teaching Czech as a foreign language and which, on the other hand, should be presented as irregular verbs, due to their small occurence, their unproductivity or irregularities.
