Individual Translator's Style in Czech Translations of Novels by Graham Greene: Analysis

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou individuálního překladatelského stylu. Ten je zkoumán na základě analýzy dvou existujících překladů románu Grahama Greena "Konec dobrodružství", který byl přeložen Janem Čulíkem a Hanou Žantovskou. Překlady byly posuzovány na základě výskytu a druhu překladatelských univerzálií, tzn. explicitace, normalizace a simplifikace. Dále byly posuzovány další tendence těchto překladatelů, např. jejich způsob zacházení se slovy cizího původu apod. Výsledky hlavní analýzy byly dále porovnávány s výsledky sekundární analýzy, ve které byl zkoumán vždy jeden další překlad od daných překladatelů. Záměrně byla vybrána díla jiných autorů ("Věž" Williama Goldinga, překl. Čulík a "Francouzova milenka" Johna Fowlese, překl. Žantovská). Tak bylo možné vypozorovat, zda se u překladatelů projevují opakující se rysy, které bychom mohli považovat za jejich překladatelský styl, nezávislý na autorovi původního díla. Analýza ukázala, že takovéto rysy se opravdu v obou analyzovaných textech u obou překladatelů daly vypozorovat a bylo tedy možné definovat jejich překladatelský styl.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the question of individual translator's style. It demonstrates on a practical example that the individual translator’s style does exist and can be defined by patterns that repeatedly appear in the translator’s work. The individual translator’s style is studied here from the point of view of the distribution of translation universals: i.e. it is presupposed here that translation universals appear in all translated texts. What can define their individual translational styles are, however, the number and the kind of occurrences that appear in the translation. Other translational patterns are studied here as well, for example the translators' use of punctuation marks, their way of dealing with foreign words etc. The analysis was carried out on the two existing translations of Graham Greene's novel "The End of the Affair" which was translated by Hana Žantovská and Jan Čulík. Later on, in order to confirm the results of the main analysis, another translation (one by each of the translators) was analyzed, namely William Golding's "The Spire" translated by Čulík and John Fowles's "The French Lieutenant's Woman" translated by Žantovská. The aim was to see if the same translational patterns appear in any translation provided by the translators in question, regardless the author of the original texts. The analysis showed that each of the translator's has certain translational patterns that appeared in both of their translations and can thus be defined as their translational styles.
