Myrmecomorphy of Sepsis flies

Abstract:

Myrmekomorfie je nejčastějším typem Batesovské mimeze u členovců. Zdá se, že některé druhy čeledi dvoukřídlých Sepsidae také napodobují mravence. Tato práce zkoumá, jestli se moucha Sepsis thoracica fenotypově podobá abundantnímu mravenci Lasius niger a zda ji tato podobnost chrání před predací slíďákem Pardosa agrestis, dominantním predátorem malých členovců v zemědělských habitatech. Za účelem testování hypotézy o myrmekomorfii jsem srovnala pohybové vlastnosti, tvar těla, velikost těla, tloušťku končetin a zbarvení mouchy Sepsis thoracica s dělnicemi mravence Lasius niger, okřídlenými samci Lasius niger a nemimetickou mouchou Drosophila hydei. Vytvořila jsem také modely, které odhadují, zda tyto organismy pavoučí a ptačí predátoři dokážou odlišit na základě zbarvení. Jedinci každého zkoumaného typu hmyzu byli poté nabídnuti jako kořist pavoukovi Pardosa agrestis a byl zaznamenán výskyt a časování dotyků, puštění a konzumace. Naše výsledky naznačují, že Sepsis thoracica by mohla být nedokonalým mimikem vícero mravenčích modelů a disponovat omezeným stupněm chemické obrany, což by z ní dělalo kvazi-batesovského mimika.

Abstract:

Myrmecomorphy is the most prevalent type of Batesian mimicry among arthropods. Some species of the dipteran family Sepsidae also appear to imitate ants. This thesis examines whether the fly Sepsis thoracica bears a phenotypic resemblance to the abundant ant Lasius niger, and whether this resemblance protects it from predation by the wolf spider Pardosa agrestis, a dominant predator of small arthropods in agricultural habitats. To test the hypo-thesis of myrmecomorphy, I compared the motion characteristics, body shape, body size, appendage thickness and colouration of Sepsis thoracica with Lasius niger workers, Lasius niger winged males and Drosophila hydei, a non-mimetic fly. I also constructed models that predict whether these organisms can be distinguished by spider and avian predators based on colouration. Specimens of each studied insect type were then offered as prey to the spider Pardosa agrestis and the occurrence and timing of touch, release and consumption were recorded. The results suggest that Sepsis thoracica might be an imperfect mimic of several ant models and possess a limited level of chemical defence, which would make it a quasi-Batesian mimic.
