Like a Reflection in a Magic Mirror: Hybridity of the film Enter the Void

Abstract:

Bakalářské práce se zabývá neoformalistickou analýzou snímku Vejdi do prázdna, režírovaného Gasparem Noé. Film společně s tvorbou tohoto filmaře nejprve zasadí do kontextu proudu nové extrémní francouzské kinematografie. Výchozí otázkou je, do jaké míry nám při uvažování o tomto snímku stačí právě ono označení „extrémní film“. Za tímto účelem se obrací k teorii paramodernistického filmu, představenou Colinem Burnettem, jenž pojímá současný umělecký film jakožto hybridní oblast kinematografie, kde dochází k míchání řady postupů. Hybridita Vejdi do prázdna je tak následně popsána na dvou rovinách – v rámci samotné struktury díla a v rámci jeho intertextuálních vazeb. K popsání vnitřních norem Vejdi do prázdna přistupuje na detailní dostředivou analýzu, jež navazuje na Burnettovu stručnou analýzu tohoto filmu. Pro rozšíření kontextů v němž se dá o Vejdi do prázdna uvažovat, odkazuje se nejprve na již popsané intertextuální vazby tohoto snímku a následně je tato množina filmů rozšířená o oblasti pomalé kinematografie a spirituálního filmu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with a neo-formalist analysis of the film Enter the Void, directed by Gaspar Noé. The film, along with the work of the filmmaker, is first placed in the context of new extreme French cinema. The initial question is to what extent the label "extreme film" is sufficient for us to think about this film. To achieve this, the author turns to the theory of paramodernist cinema, introduced by Colin Burnett, who conceives of contemporary art film as a hybrid field of cinema where a number of practices are mixed. The hybridity of Enter the Void is thus subsequently described on two levels - within the structure of the work itself and within its intertextual connections. In order to describe the internal norms of Enter the Void, a detailed centrifugal analysis follows Burnett's brief analysis of the film. In order to expand the contexts in which Enter the Void can be considered, it first refers to the already described intertextual connections of this film and then this set of films is expanded to include the areas of slow cinema and spiritual cinema.
