A demographic perspective on unwanted pregnancy and parenthood

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zachytit trendy a souvislosti nechtěného těhotenství a rodičovství se zaměřením na umělé přerušení těhotenství a odkládání dětí. Poukázat na indukované potraty s vlivem na populační ztráty dříve a dnes. Poté porovnat míry umělého přerušení těhotenství, využívání antikoncepce a babyboxů ve vybraných státech EU. V neposlední řadě vytvořením projekce pomocí Lee-Carterova modelu zjistit budoucí vývoj umělého přerušení těhotenství. V práci je i historický nástin odmítnuté gravidity a rodičovství. Zaměření je na nechtěnou graviditu sledující umělé přerušení těhotenství a dané souvislosti. Zároveň bylo popsáno nevytoužené rodičovství, kde jsou mimo jiné poznamenány babyboxy a dětské domovy. Rovněž je vymezen Lee-Carterův model, který je využitý pro tvorbu projekce. Prostřednictvím analýzy bylo zjištěno, že na počátku sledovaného období docházelo ke značným výkyvům indukovaných potratů. Po roce 1988 jsou zřetelné trvale klesající tendence. Dle specifických měr jsou nyní interrupce nejčetnější v 25–29 letech. Dnes je výrazně méně nevytoužené gravidity i díky antikoncepci. Též bylo zjištěno, že interrupce již nemají tak výrazný vliv na populační ztráty. U nechtěného rodičovství jsou v posledních letech vyšší tendence odkládat děti do babyboxu a poměr dětí v dětských domovech ke střednímu stavu osob 0–26 let roste. S pohledem na ČR a vybrané státy EU lze usoudit, že nyní ČR oproti sledovaným zemím zaujímá nižší obecné a specifické míry indukovaných potratů a nejužívanější antikoncepci, ale vyšší využití babyboxu oproti Slovensku. Projekcí pomocí Lee-Carterova modelu bylo zjištěno, že do roku 2050 se očekává značný pokles umělých přerušení těhotenství, která budou pravděpodobně nejvíce využívána ve věku 30–34 let.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to present trends and correlations between unwanted pregnancy and unwanted parenthood, with a special focus on abortions and the practice of leaving children in babyboxes. The thesis describes induced abortions and their influence on population losses in the past an nowadays. Another aim is comparing the number of abortions, level of contraception usage and usage of babyboxes in the Czech Republic and in other states of the EU. Furthermore, the thesis uses Lee-Carter's model to predict future trends in abortion practices. The thesis also presents a historical overview of unwanted pregnancies and parenthoods. It focuses on unwanted pregnancies followed by abortions and on its related consequences. Another phenomenon which is described is unwanted parenthood as well as the practice of leaving children in babyboxes and in Children's Homes. Another part of the thesis describes Lee-Carter's model which was used to create a projection analysis. The analysis shows that in the beginning of the monitored period, the numbers of abortions were rather varied. It is possible to observe declining tendencies after 1988. According to specific measurements, the most frequent age for abortion is between 25 and 29 years. Today it is contraception which significantly helps to reduce unwanted pregnancies. Another finding shows that abortions contribute to population losses to a lesser extent. In case of unwanted parenthood, it is more likely to leave a child in a babybox. The number of children placed in Children's homes is proportionally higher in case of middle class citizens in between 0 and 26 years. From the comparison of the Czech Republic and other EU states, it is possible to conclude that the number of abortions and contraception usage is lower in the Czech Republic. The usage of babyboxes is more frequent in the Czech Republic than in Slovakia. By means of Lee-Carter´s model it has been discovered that by 2050 the number of abortions will decline. The most frequent age when abortions will be performed is between 30 and 34 years.
