Dragonflies (Odonata) of Guiana Amazonian Park in French Guiana

Abstract:

Diverzita vážek lesů Guyanské Vysočiny je vysoká, jakkoliv z ekologického pohledu velmi málo probádaná. Velké množství druhů ještě zdaleka není objeveno a popsáno, o mnohých se mnoho neví. Vyskytují se v nízkých populačních hustotách a s ohledem na tempo odlesňování hrozí, že některé druhy zaniknou, aniž bychom se o nich dozvěděli. Tato práce je příspěvkem k jejich poznání. Zobrazuje unikátní metodou skenování živých vážek dobrou třetinu druhů známou z Francouzské Guyany, zkoumá diverzitu, abundance a habitatové preference vážek lesů v okolí osady Saül při severní hranici Guyanské Amazonie a zaobírá se změnami, které ve společenstvech vážek probíhají pod tlakem rychlého a nezadržitelného otevírání a fragmentace krajiny, jemuž čelí všechny tropické deštné lesy na Zemi.

Abstract:

The diversity of the rain forest dragonflies of the Guiana Shield is notable. However, it has not been sufficiently examined from the ecological point of view. There are many species that has not been discovered and described yet and there is still a significant lack of information about many of those that were. Dragonflies of French Guiana region often occur in low population densities and, given the speed of deforestation, there is a significant risk that some of the species will extinct even before we get to know them. This work is an attempt to contribute to the better knowledge of the dragonflies of that area. It depicts, with a usage of a unique method of scanning of living individuals, more than a third of the species known from French Guiana. It explores the species richness, abundance, and habitat preferences of the dragonflies of Saül region located on the Northern border of French Guiana Amazonia. This work also examines the changes of the dragonflies assemblages caused by the rapid and inexorable opening and fragmentation of the landscape, which is a process that face all the tropical forests on the Planet Earth.
